Today, I think I'll mention STEAM

Steam was launched by Valve in 2003 and was considered a no go by gamers, because it required one to be connected to the internet. However Valve still managed to  get over 200,000 gamers to use Steam with Counter Strike 1.6. Further down the line, round about 2005 third party games appeared on Steam and Valve started making a profit, but during this period Steam still had a minimal market share.

In 2007, we may all remember the big hits in that year such as Call of Duty Modern Warfare, The Orange Box and STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl the was the beginning of the golden age for steam. this time Valve announced that they had 13 Million accounts (But remember we don't know if all of them are active). With the release of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Steam now flourished as Modern Warfare 2 required players to install Steam if they really wanted to play it. The Steam specials also helped to contribute to Steam's rise to fame as this attracted many who were looking for good deals.

This is a screenshot of what Steam is now - (Taken from My PC)

In 2003 Valve created Steam with the intention of allowing users to easily patch their games, and in a turn a fortune Steam is now one of the largest game distributors in the World to date.

Steam is currently running a week of specials you may want to look into, the EA Week (click here).
Yesterday it was Dragon Age and Today it is Need For Speed with more specials to come in the rest of the week!
