Bulletstorm: Kill with Skill

A release from earlier this year which I particularly liked was BulletStorm. BulletStorm stands out because of its style and crass humour. rewarding the player with points for performing increasingly ludicrous kills. BulletStorm takes place in the 26th century where the Confederation of Planets are protected be an elite yet secret black ops army called Dead Echo. The plot is based around the the two members of Dead Echo, Grayson Hunt and Ishi Sato who crash land on a deserted vacation planet, which has now been overrun by cannibalistic tribes, meat-eating plants, and large (think Godzilla) monsters. They then have to get off the planet, while encountering some issues along the way.

Unleash Hell
Gameplay in BulletStorm is unique as it shys away from the usual FPS objective such as "go do X, we will protect you" and "protect X while he hacks the door/panel". The player has access to a sizeable arsenal of weapons and upgrades and combat moves, the game features the SkillShot system which rewards players for over-the-top ways of killing enemies, ranging from the obvious headshot to feeding them to carnivorous plants etc. The SkillShot system rewards players with points depending on the required "skill" needed for the kills, the points can then be used to purchase ammo and acquire special charges for the weapons. The player can purchase the ammo and special charges from "dropkits" which are scattered throughout the campaign.

The marketing for BulletStorm was probably, the best marketing for a game that I have seen in quite sometime, a parody of Call of Duty was made, Duty Calls, which pokes fun at aspects of the game, such as ranking up, and in game-objectives. A viral video for BulletStorm was also released which parodied the Halo 3 "Believe" diorama. This was also couple with television advertisements aired on major networks in the U.S* - (*I would assume)

However, BulletStorm does lack a competitive multiplayer mode but rather opting to include cooperative online play as well as score attack modes. Overall I found the game enjoyable and worth a buy if its on special at a local retailer or something. For me it is a break from the usual FPS Plot, Kill the Bad Guy, Save the World.

I would score it an 8.5/10.

  3. I only played the single player, and really liked, it was pretty awesome, thought, I only died about 2 times in the whole game, which I though it was weird because I'm not an expert or anything in First player shooter games.
